Argillite Bear Sculpture

This Bear sculpture was hand-carved in argillite by an unknown Haida Artist. Older argillite carvings often do not include a signature, as the style of carving was considered the artist's signature. It was acquired from a collection and is in good condition. In 2026, professional argillite carver Darrell White added the argillite base onto the sculpture. The Bear Symbol represents strength, family, vitality, courage, and health. The bear is thoughtful and independent, with little need for fellowship. The bear is also self-contained and strong-willed in nature. A Bear is of great support and comfort to those who crave human company simply for personal reassurance rather than for the simple pleasure of being with friends. The carving measures approximately 5 1/2 inches or 14 centimeters high, 2 inches or 5 centimeters wide, and2 1/2 inches or 6 1/4 centimeters deep.
