Driver Safety and Defensive Driving Program

The Driver Safety and Defensive Driving Program establishes requirements for employees operating company-owned, leased, rented, client-provided, or authorized personal vehicles while conducting Company business. The program emphasizes driver safety, defensive driving, distracted driving prevention, and collision prevention while supplementing more detailed Fleet Vehicle Safety and Driving Safety requirements. Drivers must remain alert, operate vehicles responsibly, anticipate roadway hazards, and adjust their driving for traffic, weather, visibility, road conditions, and the actions of other motorists. The program addresses defensive driving techniques, distracted driving, mobile phone and electronic device use, driver fitness and fatigue, speed management, safe following distance, aggressive driving, road rage, intersections, blind spots, backing, parking, seat belts, adverse weather, work zones, pedestrians, and roadside emergencies. Drivers are expected to maintain adequate time and space to react to hazards, avoid activities that interfere with safe vehicle operation, and stop driving when fatigue, impairment, severe weather, vehicle condition, or another hazard makes continued travel unsafe. The program also establishes requirements for driver responsibilities, training and retraining, incident and near-miss reporting, corrective actions, and safe use of personal vehicles for Company business.
