The Passiflora edulis is a vigorous, evergreen climbing vine grown for its spectacular flowers and its famous edible fruit. Widely known as passion fruit or purple granadilla, it climbs by means of curling tendrils and clothes its support in glossy, deeply three-lobed leaves. Native to southern Brazil, Paraguay and northern Argentina, it is as ornamental as it is productive. In summer the Passiflora edulis bears its unmistakable, intricate flowers—white petals set beneath a crown of purple-and-white filaments—followed, in a warm position, by round aromatic fruits filled with juicy, seed-rich pulp. A fast grower, it quickly covers a trellis, pergola or warm wall. Being frost-tender, it is best given a sheltered, sunny spot in mild areas, or grown in a container that can be moved under cover for the winter in colder climates.
