“E. Buchner” violoncello bow, Germany

The Buchner family, mostly violin makers or string merchants, were primarily based in and around Schönbach, now called Luby in the Czech Republic. None are noted as bow makers, so this handsome silver-mounted cello bow was probably commissioned from one of the larger German Vogtland bow workshops in Markneukirchen or Klingenthal. The strong, octagonal stick is of well-selected pernambuco, and produced an attractive, big, bright sound with plenty of depth, while articulating well, with plenty of steadiness and control.
