The Black Kumpay Goby is a beautiful freshwater goby prized for its unique coloration and constant grazing behavior. Males develop deep, iridescent blue to black tones with contrasting fins, while females display more subtle earth-toned colors. Peaceful by nature, these gobies spend their days perched on rocks and driftwood, grazing on algae and biofilm, making them an excellent addition to mature, well-established aquariums. Although generally peaceful, they do best in groups and can be kept with other small, non-aggressive fish. A well-oxygenated aquarium with moderate to strong water flow, smooth rocks, and sandy substrate closely mimics their natural habitat. Since they rely heavily on natural algae and biofilm, established aquariums are strongly recommended, though they will also accept high-quality prepared foods, algae wafers, and frozen foods. Common Name: Black Kumpay Goby Scientific Name: Stiphodon atropurpureus Origin: Southeast Asia Adult Size: 2–2.5 inches Temperament: Peaceful Minimum Tank Size: 20 gallons Diet: Omnivore (algae, biofilm, prepared foods, frozen foods) Temperature: 72–78°F pH: 6.5–7.8 Care Level: Moderate
