Edited by: Krista Woodley, Padmini Broomfield and Sheila Jemima When the Oral History Unit learned that the Vosper Thornycroft Woolston shipyard was going to close down it brought into focus the need to document and record a ‘people’s history’ of Thorny’s for future generations and also for the benefit and enjoyment of people today. For almost a century, Thorny’s has had a major impact on the local community. As one interviewee put it, “Thornycroft’s was Woolston”. The workers have made an enormous and impressive contribution to the local and national shipbuilding industry.
