Twenty faceted green onyx rondelles, to add a deep green note to a creation without committing to a full thread. Under the light, each facet hints at the transparency of the material. The hole of about 0.8 mm accepts nylon thread, a fine cable, or elastic thread. For a larger project, the full thread of about 166 beads is also available. A bit of gemology: onyx, agate, and carnelian belong to the same family, that of chalcedonies: quartz whose crystals, microscopic and fibrous, intertwine into a compact mass. This structure explains both their toughness (hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, density close to 2.6) and their ability to take dye: colorants penetrate between the fibers and set there durably. In antiquity already, Roman lapidaries colored chalcedonies through successive baths and then heating. Good to know: the green of these beads is obtained by dyeing the chalcedony, followed by heating that stabilizes the color. This is the standard treatment for green onyx.
