Upgraded clutch pack for DSG DQ381 (0GC) GEN 1 transmission – Stage 1, up to 850 Nm RTMG Performance presents a new performance-enhancing clutch pack for DSG DQ381 (0GC) GEN 1 transmissions that use an original-type clutch design. The Stage 1 upgrade kit includes two additional friction plates (+2 pcs). The RTMG Performance upgrade kit enables up to 22% greater torque transfer capability compared to the original clutch pack in a Stage 1 configuration. Important information about improving the torque transfer capability of the DSG transmission In the DSG DQ381 transmission, the torque produced by the engine is transmitted to the transmission via a multi-plate clutch operating in oil. This is a so-called wet clutch design. However, the transmission does not have just one clutch, but two separate clutch packs that operate independently. Their operation is controlled by an advanced mechatronic system that includes valves and sensors. The clutches are connected to two different shafts: K1 clutch: Responsible for odd gears (1, 3, 5 and 7). K2 clutch: Responsible for even gears (2, 4 and 6). When in neutral, the clutches do not transmit the engine's torque to the transmission. When the driver selects first gear and releases the brake pedal, the mechatronic system gradually increases the oil pressure of the first clutch (K1), allowing the car to move off. When shifting to second gear, the system reduces the pressure on the K1 clutch while simultaneously increasing the pressure on the K2 clutch. The shift takes place in approximately 400–1000 milliseconds. The use of oil pressure allows the gear changes to be carried out as smoothly as possible. The problem caused by tuned engines – clutch slip With factory settings, the transmission operating pressure is approximately 10–12 bar, which is sufficient for the torque levels of the original engine. When the engine is tuned and the torque it produces increases, the transmission oil pressure is not automatically increased to match the increased load. This can lead to clutch slip. What does clutch slip mean? For example, in a situation where the engine is running at 6,000 rpm, but only 5,000 rpm is transmitted to the transmission, the clutch is slipping. Because clutch operation is based on friction, slipping significantly increases the temperature between the friction materials. This can lead to overheating, material deformation, and eventually clutch failure. Even minor slipping of around 2–4 percent can wear down the friction materials, even if the driver does not necessarily notice it while driving. Worn materials can clog the transmission filters and mechatronic valves. Over time, this can result in malfunctions and even the failure of the entire system. Friction and torque transfer Friction is the force resisting motion between two surfaces in contact with each other. Two types of friction are essential for clutch operation: Static friction: Prevents motion between surfaces when the clutch is properly engaged and not slipping. Sliding friction: Occurs when the clutch slips, causing unwanted heat load and wear. How is clutch slip prevented? The torque transfer capability of the clutch can be improved in the following ways: Increasing the friction surface area: By adding friction and steel plates to the clutch pack (+2 pcs), the total friction surface area can be increased. Improving the friction coefficients: Steel plates with higher surface roughness improve the grip between the plates. Increasing the oil pressure: Increasing the transmission oil pressure to 18 bar through mechatronic programming is essential for performance use. Clutches upgraded for performance The upgraded clutch pack improves torque transfer capability in two key ways: with a larger friction surface area and a better friction coefficient. When these features are properly combined with the correctly adjusted oil pressure, better torque control and durability are achieved under high loads.
