Madison in 50 Maps
Stephen Kennedy June 8, 2027 Discover Madison in a brand-new way through a full-color book of maps. From effigy mounds to historical icehouses, these new, original maps show fifty-plus ways of visualizing Wisconsin’s capital city. Ever wondered the origin of the street names around town? Or the parameters of Badger territory (the UW-Madison kind) versus badger territory (the furry wild critter kind)? Local cartographer Stephen Kennedy explores where fifteen-minute cities, new growth, and neighborhood festivals exist, plus much more. Broken into six sections—Before the City, Establishing the City, Structure of the City, People and Places of the City, Seasons of the City, and Future of the City—Madison in 50 Maps takes an expansive view of the city as it was, is, and could be. Cartophiles and Madisonians alike will enjoy this opportunity to become an armchair explorer of the beautiful city of four lakes. Part of the 50 Maps series __ Stephen Kennedy has been making maps of all kinds since 2008. A background in industrial design at Georgia Tech gave him the visual foundation; graduate work at MIT’s Department of Urban Studies and Planning gave him the civic lens to put it to use. Professionally, he has worked developing digital mapping tools for analyzing redlining and urban land use, and he currently leads the cartography team at Mapbox. He also runs LATLONG.SHOP, a Madison-focused map brand he founded in 2022. Most summer Saturdays you can find him schlepping prints to sell at his booth on State Street.
