Clay-pot buying guide Glazed vs. unglazed clay: general differences Feature Unglazed clay (our pots) Glazed clay Construction Exposed clay surface, without a glaze coating. A fired glaze covers some or all of the clay surface. Moisture Porous walls can absorb moisture and allow evaporation. Glaze reduces moisture movement through the coated surface; drying depends on glaze coverage, openings and growing conditions. Drainage Glaze alone does not tell you whether a pot drains. Check the actual openings and keep them clear. Our clay pots are unglazed. This terracotta drum is a bottomless mounting cylinder, not a conventional planting pot. Water can move through the porous clay and evaporate, making it well suited to direct potting, especially in wet or humid growing conditions. Drying still depends on airflow, watering and your growing mix.Direct growing or cache pot? Mount suitable epiphytic orchids on the drum surface as described above. The bottomless cylinder is not a conventional media-holding pot or water-catching cache pot.Choose by root fit. Allow room on the mounting surface for the current roots and new growth without forcing them through openings. Check the actual dimensions before planning an arrangement; handmade sizes vary.Repotting. For mounted plants, reassess the arrangement when roots outgrow the usable surface, ideally as new roots begin growing. Moisten roots before gently loosening them; do not pull roots attached to clay or threaded through openings. Avoid disturbing firmly attached healthy roots; move to a larger mounting surface only when needed.
