The apparently simple engine breather, when in working condition creates a partial vacuum inside the crankcase which means that at the point of a potential oil leak the engine tends to suck air in rather than leak! If you open the lid with engine running oil and fumes will always gush out. On each down stoke of the piston any air inside the crankcase is compressed, if pressure cannot escape the resulting power loss can be considerable.
