Cavendish Beach, Prince Edward Island

The sketch captures Cavendish Beach on a summer day, looking down the boardwalk toward the water. A red and white striped lifeguard beach hut sits at the end of the walkway, the kind of cheerful, no-nonsense structure that has stood on Maritime beaches for generations. Colourful umbrellas dot the dunes on either side, and the Gulf of St. Lawrence stretches wide and blue beyond the grasses. It is the kind of scene that makes you feel the warmth of the sand before you have even arrived. Cavendish Beach on the north shore of Prince Edward Island is consistently ranked among the best beaches in Canada. The Gulf of St. Lawrence keeps the water warmer than the Atlantic side, the red sand dunes are unlike anything else on the east coast, and the whole area sits within PEI National Park, which means the dunes and beach grass are protected and the shoreline stays wild. Cavendish itself is the most visited part of the island, partly for the beach and partly because this is Anne of Green Gables country. The Green Gables Heritage Place is just up the road, the Cavendish Boardwalk brings the town to life in summer, and the red dirt roads winding through the north shore make for some of the best cycling and driving in the Maritimes. Whether you are coming back for the twentieth summer or planning your first visit, Cavendish has a way of feeling exactly like what a beach holiday is supposed to feel like.
