Saint Paul of Thebes

Likely the first Christian hermit, Saint Paul retreated to the wilderness to avoid martyrdom, but found a calling he had not anticipated. He developed a detachment from the world and a strong prayer life. His needs were met by a stream and miraculous bread delivered daily by a raven. After persecution ended, he chose to remain a hermit. Feast Day: January 15
