Syro-Hittite terracotta female figure, c. 2nd millennium BCE. Stylized standing figure with outstretched arms and pierced details to the head and torso. A classic example of the fertility/household figures from this period and region, showing the characteristic elongated form and simplified features. This figure measures approximately 6 1/4 inches in height. It has been repaired from two pieces, and the break lines are still visible, as shown in the photos. Glue residue around the break lines visible. Surface encrustation and wear consistent with age. 6 5/16" in height. The terracotta figure retains extensive original burial accretions across the surface, visible as small, rounded mineral and soil concretions firmly bonded to the clay body. These encrustations formed naturally during centuries of burial in mineral-rich soils, as groundwater carrying dissolved calcium and silicate compounds gradually precipitated onto the porous, low-fired terracotta. The resulting nodules are integral to the surface and cannot be removed without damage to the original surface. Such mineral accretions are characteristic of ancient Near Eastern terracottas, particularly Syro-Hittite examples, and are widely regarded as positive indicators of long-term burial and authenticity. The concretions follow natural erosion patterns and recesses of the figure, further supporting their ancient origin. Conservation practice typically preserves these features, as they constitute part of the object’s archaeological history and surface integrity. Provenance: Ex Roland, New York. Acquired from a private New York estate.
