Japanese Silk Bolster Cushion - Cranes & Pine on Golden Maru Obi

This long silk bolster cushion depicts great white cranes soaring across a landscape of burning gold and amber, wings fully spread, unhurried and magnificent. Around them, stylised pine fans and delicate plum blossom speak of endurance and renewal, the classic symbols of a Japanese winter here giving way to spring. The ground shifts from deep burnt orange to molten gold, luminous and alive. Made from a vintage Japanese Maru Obi (c.1950s), one of the most prestigious forms of obi, woven on both sides. The reverse is a warm cream textured velvet which complements the beautifully woven crane feathers. The kind of piece that makes a room feel as though it has a story.
