Soliflor | Handmade Stoneware Vase for a Single Stem

This vase holds one stem. That is enough. The Soliflor was born from a radical simplicity, a form that stands like a cliff, that tapers like a point of rock. Its white, matte stoneware carries an almost mineral quality, a surface that speaks to the limestone it was photographed on at the Côte des Basques. That is not coincidence. It is kinship. Part of the À Ras Bord series, Côte des Basques, 2026, this piece marks a new chapter in Cecile Mestelan's practice: more mature, more assured, more free. An object of intention You don't fill a soliflor. You choose it. One rose, one branch, one wild grass. The vase does the rest. It asks you to slow down, to look at one thing, to let that be enough. These pieces were not placed on a white plinth. They were set on stone shaped by years of water and salt, on the natural walls of the Côte des Basques at sunset. Every vein of rust and white in that limestone tells a story of slow transformation. Clay undergoes the same, carried by a hand and accelerated by fire. Placing ceramics on those rocks was an act of recognition. They are not foreign to that landscape. They are an accelerated version of it. Radical Romanticism is what Cecile calls this practice now. Not nostalgia. Not decorative softness. The idea that sensitivity is a political position. That taking care of objects, materials, and spaces is a radical act in a world that moves fast and throws things away. This vase carries that intention.
