He was later recruited to serve as the surgeon general for Simon Bolivar's revolutionary army in Venezuela. While stationed at the hospital in Angostura, he created a tincture of herbs and spices to treat stomach ailments. Angostura Bitters won a medal at the World's Fair in 1873 and became one of the most popular bitters in the world.
