1953. Provenance: Mattei Radev (1927-2009), thought to have been acquired directly from the artist, and thence by bequest. Duncan Grant (1885-1978) was a central figure in the Bloomsbury Group, best known for his post-impressionist paintings and designs. He formed a lasting and open relationship with Vanessa Bell that accommodated Grant’s homosexuality and provided a fertile ground for their creativity. Together they established a home at Charleston in Sussex, which was to become a hub for the wider group. Amongst these was the gallery owner, artist and critic, Eardley Knollys (1902-1991), who later introduced the young Hungarian emigré, Mattei Radev (1927-2009) to their society. Radev went on to be highly accomplished picture framer, including working for both Grant and Bell, and was instrumental in preserving Grant’s legacy.. 510 by 380mm (20 by 15 inches).
