One-Day Raku Firing w/ Brett Sauve

Still Life Studios is excited to host a 3-hour Raku firing experience for members, students, and the general public. Join us and discover the magic of Raku! Participants will explore a variety of techniques, including traditional raku glazing with post-firing reduction, as well as experimental approaches like naked raku and horsehair raku. See below for more details. Class Outline This outdoor workshop will take place in our parking lot on Sunday, July 12th, from 11 AM–2 PM, where participants will observe and engage with the firing process in real time. The workshop is led by local artist Brett Sauve, with assistance from Tiffany McIntyre and the Still Life Studio team. We will provide a selection of raku glazes, along with horsehair and feathers for decorative surface effects during the firing. Participants are asked to bring 1–3 already bisque-fired pieces, each no larger than 6” W x 12” H. Work must be made from heavily grogged clay, such as Raku clay or Soldate 60 (Soldate 60 available for purchase at our Ferndale studio). * Please note that speckled and black clay bodies are not recommended, as they can increase the risk of cracking or explosion during rapid heating. If you need bisque firing services, you may select the add-on option for an additional $20. Bone-dry greenware must be dropped off by EOD on Sunday, July 5th. Please clearly label each piece by signing “RAKU” on the bottom. Finished bisque work will be available for pickup from the student bisque shelf before the workshop.
