Our flag flies not just over our own soil, but in the hearts of all who long for liberty, the flag serves as a daily reminder how strong our Nation is, and will always be, due to the service and sacrifice of those who have worn and wear the uniform. This Memorial Day, the Green Beret Foundation expanded our annual tribute hoodie to honor every fallen member of the U.S. Army Special Forces Regiment identified through the official 18 Series Branch structure dating back to 1987. In 1987, the Special Forces Branch was formally established, creating the 18 Series Military Occupational Specialty designation that identifies Green Berets as they are recognized today. Prior to that time, Special Forces soldiers served under a variety of different military classifications, making it extraordinarily difficult to definitively identify every fallen Green Beret solely through existing records. While the USASOC Memorial Wall honors 1,247 fallen soldiers dating back to 1952, a fully verified list of all fallen Green Berets prior to the establishment of the 18 Series Branch does not currently exist in a centralized or definitive format. With that understanding, this year’s hoodie was intentionally expanded to include every identifiable member of the Special Forces Regiment from the creation of the 18 Series Branch forward. This decision ensures the tribute remains historically accurate while honoring the sacrifice, service, and legacy of the Green Berets who gave their lives in defense of our nation.
