Ballast by Heather Nuber
Mixed Textiles, Sterling Silver, Aquamarine 16" x 8" x 1" Process/Concept: Interpersonal dynamics and social interactions inspire my work, and I express these concepts through the exploration of form and material. I create contemporary jewelry and sculpture using simple offset shapes that have been described as “soft geometry.” Contemporary quilting methods, intimate details, and raw edges are incorporated to address relational characteristics, vulnerabilities, and all of our beautiful imperfections. From the Artist: Many of the textiles I use are dead stock, found second hand, or repurposed, they bring an innate history and nostalgia into the piece. As an interdisciplinary artist, I often will use the same materials across different mediums and formats to create a conceptual thread. It also lowers my waste, and I truly enjoy taking materials intended for one use and reimagining them for another purpose. The necklace Ballast, was created with left over textiles from a previous sculptural installation work in which I had repurposed domestic linens.
