Djoharian Collection · Taznakht · Southern High Atlas Vintage Taznakht Berber Rug 146 × 100 cm · Brick Red & Orange Provenance and Tribal Heritage Taznakht rugs come from the small town of the same name in Morocco's southern High Atlas, where Berber women of the Ouaouzguite tribes have been weaving for generations. The region is known for short-pile rugs in warm earth tones — terracotta, brick red, orange — drawn from local mineral and plant dyes and the sheep's wool of the southern slopes. Where the Beni Ourain of the Middle Atlas keep to disciplined cream-and-charcoal compositions, Taznakht work embraces saturated colour as the primary expressive material. This piece was hand-knotted around 1980 in 100% hand-spun sheep's wool on a wool foundation, and carries the abstract, intuitive composition typical of nomadic Berber craft. The low pile of 3 to 5 mm and small format make it a practical everyday rug with genuine tribal character. Colour and Composition The palette pairs warm brick red melange with bright orange accents — a saturated combination characteristic of southern Atlas weaving. The abstract motifs follow the intuitive vocabulary of nomadic Berber craft, with each element placed where the weaver chose rather than where a strict pattern would have directed. Presence in the Room At 146 × 100 cm (3.3 × 4.8 ft), 1.5 m² this is a small, everyday format. Three contexts in which the vintage Taznakht reaches its full effect: Bedside or entryway: the small format and warm palette make this an ideal companion in a personal space where craft should signal quietly. Reading chair or informal corner: the tribal motifs give the rug a quietly playful character that works particularly well in informal living spaces. Boho or rustic interior: the brick-red palette grounds neutral interiors and lifts boho, mid-century, or rustic schemes — the rug pairs naturally with raw wood, leather, linen and unglazed ceramics.
