East German M56/76 Steel Combat Helmet – Genuine Military Surplus An iconic piece of Cold War military history, the East German M56/76 Combat Helmet was issued to the Nationale Volksarmee (NVA) and became one of the most distinctive military helmets of the former German Democratic Republic. The unusual flared steel shell has its origins in an experimental German helmet design developed during the Second World War but never adopted for general Wehrmacht service. The concept was revived following the formation of the East German armed forces, with the M56 entering service during the 1950s. The M56 underwent several improvements during its long service life, culminating in the M56/76 version introduced in 1976. It retained the unmistakable wide, angular shell while incorporating updated construction and liner components. The helmet remained in East German service through the final years of the Cold War until German reunification in 1990. With its unmistakable profile and genuine Cold War history, the M56/76 is an excellent addition to any military surplus, Warsaw Pact or East German militaria collection.
