18th century straw hat, dyed black, with gathered silk ribbon trim. Cream silk ribbon ties. Hat measures 14 1/2" across with a 1/2" tall crown. Trim is based on a runaway ad from the New York Gazette, May 19, 1760. "a black satin or straw hat, with two rows of flouncing round the brim, besides what goes round the crown."
