On 11 June 1963 a Buddhist monk named Thich Quang Duc sat down at a road intersection in Saigon. He was sixty six years old. Two other monks poured petrol over him. He lit it himself, and then he did not move. Everyone around him was shouting or weeping. He stayed upright and silent.He was protesting against the treatment of Buddhists under the government of Ngo Dinh Diem, weeks after police shot into a crowd that had been forbidden from flying the Buddhist flag. The photographer Malcolm Browne of the Associated Press was there. His picture was named World Press Photo of the Year and it changed how the rest of the world understood what was happening in Vietnam. Less than five months later the government he was protesting against had been overthrown.The ring is a tribute to the gravity of protest and to the fire of conviction. It is not about the dying.
