Mummies were made to preserve the dead for the journey into the afterlife, not to frighten the living. The body was dried with natron salt, wrapped in layers of linen, and protected with amulets and written spells. In later stories, disturbing a sealed tomb could awaken the dead...or bring a curse upon whoever entered.
