The bold red-and-white Ameland Lighthouse has been standing above the dunes near Hollum since the late 19th century. At 55 metres tall, it is one of the most distinctive landmarks on the Wadden Island of Ameland, in the Dutch province of Friesland.Known locally as Bornrif, the lighthouse was commissioned by King Willem III and built in 1880–1881 to a design by Dutch lighthouse architect Quirinus Harder. Its construction is particularly unusual, with the tower made mainly from cast iron and assembled from prefabricated sections on the island. It continues to stand watch over the North Sea today.
