Excel is a highly productive fig variety known for its light greenish-yellow skin and exceptionally sweet, rich flavor. The interior flesh is a beautiful translucent amber, juicy, and syrupy with a distinct honey-like flavor profile. Bred by legendary researcher Ira Condit as an "improved Kadota" type, this variety is excellent for fresh eating, drying, or preserves, and it is especially noted for its superb ability to resist splitting even under adverse, rainy conditions. Latin Name: Ficus carica Site and Soil: Figs thrive in 1/2 day to full sun and well-drained soil. Pollination Requirements: Excel Fig is self-fertile. Hardiness: Figs are hardy to between 0° and 5° F with winter protection. Bearing Age: 1-2 years after planting. Size at Maturity: 10-15 ft in height, smaller with pruning or when grown in containers. Bloom Time: Flowers are not noticeable as they are inside the fruit. Ripening Time: Produces a light summer breba crop followed by a heavy main crop from late August through September. Yield: 30-50 lbs. or more per plant on a mature, healthy tree. Pests & Diseases: Figs are generally pest and disease resistant.
