Kaikōmako, Pennantia corymbosa
A dense, tangled shrub in its juvenile stage, bearing small, delicate leaves. As it matures—reaching approximately 10 m tall—the foliage becomes larger and more attractive. Cream-coloured flowers give way to small purple berries. Uncommon in the upper North Island but does grow nationwide, this species is found in lowland forests. Its Māori name translates to 'food for the bellbird.'
