Mystery Rias Baixas Albarino 2021
From Galicia’s rain-swept Atlantic coast comes a serious, beautifully developed Albariño. It is fresh and maritime, with considerably more texture and depth than a simple summer white. The fruit comes from vineyards in Val do Salnés, the historic heartland of Rías Baixas. Here, cool ocean air and abundant rainfall meet sandy, quartz-rich granite soils, giving Albariño its distinctive combination of aromatic fruit, vibrant acidity and salty mineral character. Hand-picked into small boxes, the grapes were fermented in stainless steel. Part of the wine then matured in tank for several months, while the remainder spent six months in French and American oak before the components were reunited. The result is dry, energetic and unusually full-bodied, with impressive complexity. Expect lemon and lime peel, green apple, ripe peach and apricot, followed by white flowers, fennel and rosemary. Savoury pastry notes and a distinctive granite and sea-spray character add further depth. The palate is vibrant and beautifully balanced, with juicy fruit, firm texture, refreshing acidity and a persistent mineral finish. A superb match for grilled white fish, seafood, sashimi, ceviche, roast lemon chicken or a rich vegetable quiche. Serve at 10 to 12°C in a generous white-wine glass.
