It was traditionally regarded as a herb of protection, particularly by sailors, and was also believed to offer clues about the weather. According to old weather lore, if bladderwrack hung from a string dried out, fine weather was on its way; if it remained damp, rain was thought to be approaching. Bladderwrack has also been associated with prosperity and abundance. Some folk traditions suggest keeping a piece of dried seaweed in a purse or near the entrance of the home to attract financial good fortune.
