Summer Grass and Gums Ink, acrylic on board with heated soldering iron 24cm x 47cm BIOGRAPHY BA Fine Arts COFA BA of Dramatic Art in Design NIDA Dip Ed Visual Arts UWS Penelope has had an extensive and varied career in the arts spanning a period of some 20 years. She completed a degree in Fine Arts in Sydney at COFA at a young age which was followed shortly by a degree in Stage and Costume design which she completed at the highly prestigious acting school, NIDA. She worked for several years through to her thirties in Sydney as a designer, concept illustrator and model maker before finally completing a Diploma of Teaching in Visual Arts which has allowed her to finance her foray into her own art practice. Today Penelope works from her studio on a property in rural NSW, where she lives with her furniture designer/maker husband Darren Oates and two rescue dogs. Most of her visual stimulus comes from the surrounding bushland of the lower blue mountains and wider Hawkesbury area. ABOUT PENELOPE OATES Penelope’s distinctive hybrid style of drawing is with a soldering iron combined with coloured inks and acrylics, and one that she has developed over many years. The process of gently etching and re-etching into the painted surface nicely mirrors the marks left in nature with its natural process of decay and renewal. Both memory and direct experience of the landscape come into play when considering a work. She is eternally drawn to the mystical, timelessness of Australian gums set amongst rocky terrain under a cloak of meandering mist...this is what captures her attention.
