The 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards played a vital role in General Herbert Kitchener’s campaign to reconquer the Sudan and avenge the death of General Charles Gordon, who had been killed at Khartoum thirteen years earlier. The battalion journeyed deep into the Sudanese desert, utilizing a combination of newly constructed military railways and river steamers to push south along the Nile. On September 2, 1898, they found themselves on the front lines at the Battle of Omdurman, fought just across the river from the ruins of Khartoum. The Grenadiers, alongside the rest of the Anglo-Egyptian force, formed a defensive arc anchored to the river. When the Khalifa’s Mahdist army launched a series of brave but exposed frontal assaults, the British responded with devastating modern firepower. Armed with Lee-Metford magazine rifles, Maxim machine guns, and quick-firing artillery, the Grenadiers helped unleash a relentless wall of fire. The Sudanese warriors, largely armed with spears and outdated firearms, were cut down from distances they could not bridge. Following the victory, the 1st Battalion crossed the Nile and landed at Khartoum. On September 4, they stood in formation outside the ruined governor’s palace. There, the Grenadiers participated in a somber memorial service for General Gordon, hoisting the British and Egyptian flags over the city. By October 1898, their mission accomplished and British dominance in the region secured, the battalion departed Egypt. Condition – NEF, some contact wear.
