You may remember that Devrim had his shop in our loft in 2025 offering fine handmade carpets, textiles, and jewelry ethically sourced from local artisans throughout the Anatolian region of Turkey. Celatettin Berberoğlu is a 3rd generation feltmaker and and officially recognized "Felt Artist' by the Turkish Ministry of Culture. His workshop is in Konya, where he continues the craft with his wife, Kübra. Felt is one of the earliest human textiles and cherished for its excellent thermostatic ability. In Turkey, it also has important folkloric and religious values. It is closely entwined with Sufism; 'suf' means wool and 'suf-i' means wearing wool clothes. According to Sufi belief, felt removes and shields against negative energy and also offers healing properties. In Turkey, classical handmade felt making is nearly extinct; Mr. Berberoğlu is one of the few remaining artists working in this endangered tradition and has been named a UNESCO Living Human Treasure (2023).
