George Dannatt (1915–2009) Movement Through a Landscape, 1997 Unique Pencil on card, initialled and dated, additionally signed, titled and dated verso. George Dannatt was one of the most distinctive British abstract artists of the post-war period. Born in London in 1915, he studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts before serving in the Royal Artillery during the Second World War. Following the war, he became associated with the influential St Ives group of artists, working alongside figures including Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth, Terry Frost and Peter Lanyon. Although rooted in the landscape tradition, Dannatt was never interested in literal representation. Instead, he sought to distil the experience of landscape into its underlying structures, reducing forms to lines, geometric shapes and carefully balanced compositions. His work reflects a lifelong interest in architecture, mathematics and spatial relationships, creating images that feel both rigorous and lyrical. Produced in October 1997, Movement Through a Landscape belongs to the final decade of Dannatt’s career. The composition demonstrates the clarity and confidence that characterised his later work, where circles, planes and intersecting lines combine to suggest rhythm, movement and the geometry of the natural world.
