Fabio Gea Cul Otte Vino Rosso 2023
Grape: Nebbiolo Vintage: 2023 Type: Red Crafted by former geologist and radical winemaker Fabio Gea, this small-batch cuvée is a fiercely artisanal, boundary-pushing translation of Piedmontese terroir. Operating under the estate name La Msoira e'l Rastel ("The Sickle and the Rake") near Barbaresco, Gea farms less than a single hectare of old, organically worked vines. The Nebbiolo grapes are completely destemmed and subjected to a native-yeast fermentation and a two- to three-week maceration. Eschewing traditional wood aging, Gea raises this wine inside custom-designed stoneware and handmade porcelain vessels he creates himself—a method meant to allow the liquid to breathe without imparting wood flavors. Bottled with zero added sulfur, no temperature control, and no filtration, it is an energetic, avant-garde expression of a classic grape. In the glass, it pours a medium, luminous ruby color with brilliant clarity. The nose is highly complex and explosive, trading any natural funk for a clean, fragrant bouquet of fresh red cherries, wild raspberries, crushed rose petals, and a savory undercurrent of leather, tobacco, and dry clay. On the palate, a "crystalline" core of electric, limestone-driven acidity slices through the fleshy red-fruit profile, creating a remarkably vibrant, lively mouthfeel. True to its variety, a massive, sticky framework of fine-grained tannins coats the mouth, yet the porcelain aging lends a polished, supple roundness to the mid-palate. The finish is intensely dry, long, and savory, leaving a persistent trail of wild cranberries, forest floor, and crushed stone.
