Rhubarb - Mammoth Red (Pack of 1 Crown) Rhuem x hybridum (NOT to WA, TAS) Rhubarb Mammoth Red is a traditional garden favourite grown for its thick, tart stalks that bring rich flavour to pies, crumbles, jams, stewed fruit and preserves. Supplied as a pack of 1 crown, this variety is ideal for gardeners who want to establish a productive perennial patch rather than start from seed. Rhubarb grows best in cooler Australian climates where it can enjoy a winter rest and strong spring growth. Plant the crown into fertile, well-drained soil with plenty of compost, give it steady moisture through active growth, and allow the plant time to build a strong root system before taking heavy harvests. Only the stalks are eaten. The leaves are not edible and should be removed and discarded after harvest. Product Highlights Pack of 1 rhubarb crown Traditional red-stalked rhubarb for home gardens Tart stalks suited to pies, crumbles, jams, sauces and stewed fruit Long-lived perennial in suitable cool and temperate climates Best planted in rich, well-drained soil with compost added Allow the crown to establish before heavy harvesting Leaves are not edible and must not be eaten Growing Guide Plant rhubarb in a sunny to lightly shaded position. In warmer areas, morning sun with afternoon protection is preferred. Choose deep, fertile soil that drains well. Mix through compost or well-rotted manure before planting. Avoid waterlogged soil, as crowns can rot in wet conditions. Plant the crown with the growing buds near soil level. Water in well after planting, then keep the soil evenly moist during active growth. Mulch around the plant to help retain soil moisture, but keep mulch away from the crown itself. Climate Suitability Cool and Alpine: Best suited. Plant in winter to early spring while dormant. Temperate: Suitable where summers are not too hot. Give good soil moisture and some afternoon protection in warmer districts. Subtropical: Possible only with care. Grow in the coolest part of the garden with afternoon shade and consistent moisture. Performance may be shorter-lived. Tropical and Arid: Not recommended as a long-term perennial crop. Rhubarb generally needs cooler conditions and does not enjoy extreme heat. Harvesting Do not overharvest in the first season. Let the crown establish and build strength. Once mature, harvest firm stalks by gently pulling and twisting them from the base. Leave enough stalks on the plant so it can keep feeding the crown for future growth. Remove the leaf blade after harvest. Use the stalk only. Toxicity and Warning Rhubarb leaves are not edible and must not be eaten by people or pets. The edible part is the stalk. Keep leaves away from children, pets and livestock. Dispose of leaves after harvesting.
