A used example of Tetlow's Perfumery, Scott RT19, one cent, printed in red, perforated, with a clear 1881 cancel applied at the factory when the stamp was affixed to a Tetlow perfume bottle - exactly as intended under the Civil War-era revenue tax system. The Story Behind the Stamp The Tax Act of 1862 required manufacturers of perfumery, medicines, matches, and playing cards to affix revenue stamps to their products as proof of tax payment. Manufacturers who paid for engraved private dies at their own expense received a discount on the stamps printed - and gained the added benefit of using the stamp design as a miniature advertisement for their brand. Henry Tetlow's Philadelphia perfumery was one of the firms that took advantage of this arrangement, producing a distinctive one-cent stamp that was cancelled directly on bottles as they left the factory. These private die proprietary stamps were in use from 1862 to 1883, and genuine on-bottle cancels like this 1881 example are the authentic artifact of that system - a tiny piece of Gilded Age American commercial and tax history.
