Antique English Needlework Sampler, 1864
An 1864 hand-stitched needlework sampler featuring colorful alphabets, floral motifs, birds, and a traditional house scene, all worked in bright thread on open weave linen. Historically, samplers were created as practice pieces to teach young girls embroidery skills, lettering, and decorative stitch work, while also serving as a record of their progress and education. The sampler itself shows age-related wear including fraying to the fabric edges, minor discoloration, and imperfections consistent with antique textiles. The frame also shows cosmetic wear (especially along the bottom left corner) and appears to be later than the sampler itself. The backing is intact and retains its original labeling. Comes ready to hang. Measures 17.75" x 16.5." Sourced in England
