The Victron SmartSolar MPPT 75/15 is a 15A maximum power point tracking solar charge controller for 12V and 24V systems, with real load terminals built in. It hunts the panel's maximum power point continuously, converts surplus voltage into charge current, and runs a multi-stage adaptive charge algorithm you can override completely if your battery calls for it. Peak efficiency is 98 percent. Bluetooth is built in, so it configures from VictronConnect on your phone with nothing extra to buy. The 75/15 is the sweet spot of the small SmartSolar controllers. Same 75V ceiling as the 75/10, same physical footprint, same load output - but half again the charge current, which lifts the usable array from one panel to a decent pair. It suits caravans, camper trailers, canopy builds, boats and off-grid sheds where the array is modest and the loads are lights, a fridge and phone charging. How much solar can you run on a 75/15? Two numbers, and the second one catches people out. Panel wattage: 220W at 12V, or 440W at 24V. That is the nominal PV power the controller converts. Connect more than that and the controller simply limits its output to 15A and clips the rest, which is money spent on panel you never use. Treat 220W at 12V as the working ceiling. Array open circuit voltage: this is the harder limit. Maximum PV open circuit voltage is 75V, and maximum PV short circuit current is 15A. Open circuit voltage is not fixed - it climbs as panel temperature drops, so an array that measures comfortably under 75V on a hot day can push higher on a cold morning. Take the Voc figure from your panel label, add cold-weather headroom, and keep the total under 75V. Two 12V-nominal panels in parallel is straightforward. Two in series needs the cold-weather sum done properly before you commit. It has a physical load output - and most MPPTs do not The larger SmartSolar models do not have one. The 75/15 does: genuine load terminals rated at 15A continuous. Lights, a small fridge, a USB panel - wire them to the controller and it powers them directly. No relay, no separate module. The real value is battery protection. The controller drops the load before the battery is flattened. Low voltage load disconnect is selectable at 11.1V or 11.8V, or handed to the BatteryLife algorithm. Reconnect is 13.1V or 14V, or BatteryLife. On lead acid, BatteryLife is the better setting - it moves the disconnect threshold day by day so the bank is not repeatedly parked at a deep state of discharge, which is what shortens their life more than anything else. For a small build, that is one less box on the wall and one less set of wiring to run. The bit no one explains: VE.Smart Networking A Smart Battery Sense, SmartShunt or BMV-712 reads voltage and temperature at the battery terminals themselves and broadcasts them over Bluetooth. The 75/15 listens, and sets its charge voltage from that reading rather than from its own terminals. Why it matters: the controller sits at the far end of a cable. Under charge current that cable drops voltage, so the controller always reads a little higher than the battery really is. It concludes the battery is fuller than it is and tapers early - every cycle, every day. Give it a genuine battery-side reading and the battery actually gets to full. Synchronised charging comes with it. Run more than one SmartSolar MPPT - say a fixed roof array on one and a portable blanket on another - and over the same VE.Smart network they step through bulk, absorption and float together instead of working against each other. A network holds up to 10 devices, but only one sense source is permitted. One sensor feeding many chargers. Key features Ultra fast maximum power point tracking - it earns its keep on cloudy, changeable days Peak efficiency of 98 percent - very little lost between panel and battery Physical load output, 15A continuous - lights or a small fridge run straight off the controller BatteryLife load disconnect - adapts the cut-off rather than repeatedly deep-cycling the bank Automatic 12V or 24V battery voltage selection on first power up Multi-stage adaptive charge algorithm, or fully user defined for batteries with their own numbers Equalisation is disabled by default - available for flooded lead acid, off unless you turn it on Bluetooth built in - setup, live monitoring and firmware updates from VictronConnect VE.Direct port for a wired link to a GX device or a PC VE.Smart Networking - battery-side voltage and temperature sense, plus synchronised charging with other SmartSolar controllers Very low self consumption - 20mA at 12V, 10mA at 24V Protected against PV reverse polarity, output short circuit and over temperature Mounting it - read this before you pick a spot This is an indoor unit. Protection category is IP43 for the electronics and IP22 for the connection area. It is not sealed and it is not waterproof. Do not mount it in an engine bay, under a tray, in a wheel arch, or anywhere it will cop rain, road spray or dust. Inside the canopy, inside the van, in a dry locker or on a shed wall is where it belongs. Mount it vertically, terminals facing downwards. Not flat on its back, not on its side. Mount it on a non-flammable substrate. The heatsink runs warm under load. Leave clear air above and below so it can convection cool. Boxing it in costs output on hot days. Mount it within 3 metres of the battery, but never directly above it. Close, to limit voltage drop. Not above, because batteries vent. Do not mount it in a user-accessible area. The terminals are live. Power terminals accept 6mm2 (AWG10) cable. Size the run for length and current, not just to fill the terminal. Check battery polarity twice. Reverse battery polarity blows an internal fuse that is not practically user-replaceable. The WireBox-S 75-10/15 terminal cover fits this model if you want the connection area shrouded. Sold separately. Connect the battery first, then the PV. Disconnect in the reverse order. The second limit is voltage: total array open circuit voltage must stay below 75V, and open circuit voltage rises as the panels get cold. Read the Voc figure off the panel label and allow headroom for a cold morning. What is the difference between the 75/10 and the 75/15? Charge current and usable array size. The 75/10 handles 10A and 145W at 12V. The 75/15 handles 15A and 220W at 12V. Everything else is the same - same 75V PV ceiling, same physical load output at 15A continuous, same 12V or 24V auto selection, same 100 x 113 x 40 mm case. The 75/15 is 0.6 kg against 0.5 kg. Is it waterproof? Can I mount it in the engine bay? No. Protection category is IP43 for the electronics and IP22 for the connection area, which is an indoor rating. It must not be mounted in an engine bay or anywhere it will see rain, road spray or dust. Pick a dry, ventilated spot inside the vehicle, van or building. Can I run lights and a fridge directly from the controller? Yes. The 75/15 has a physical load output rated at 15A continuous. It will disconnect the load before the battery is flattened, with a cut-out selectable at 11.1V or 11.8V, or the BatteryLife algorithm which adapts the threshold instead of letting the battery sit deeply discharged. Will it charge lithium batteries? Yes. The charge algorithm is multi-stage adaptive or fully user defined, and the absorption and float voltages are adjustable, so you can dial in whatever your battery manufacturer specifies. Equalisation is disabled by default, which is correct for lithium - leave it off. The sun is up but the controller is showing nothing. Is it broken? Usually not. PV voltage must exceed battery voltage plus 5V for the controller to start, and then remain above battery voltage plus 1V to keep running. In weak or early light the panel never reaches that, so the controller stays idle and reports nothing. Normal behaviour, not a fault. What size cable do the terminals take? The power terminals accept 6mm2 (AWG10). Mount the controller within 3 metres of the battery to keep voltage drop in check, but never directly above the battery.
