Antique 18K Essex Crystal horse racing ring
Originally a tie pin, this Essex Crystal was converted to a ring at some point in its lifetime. The original piece is 18K and the ring mounting addition is 14K. The scene of the horse and rider is achieved by reverse carving into the rock crystal, carefully painting the carving and then sealing it with a shimmery (painted or mother of pearl) backing. This process creates a floating, three-dimensional effect, as if the tiny scene were actually playing out inside the ring. This example shows some deterioration to the paint and wear to the crystal surface, but the image is still clear and the effect is a bit ghostly! The face of the ring is just under 22m (or a bit over 3/4") and the ring is sturdy and showy. Beaded detail around the edge. Measurements: Size 5 3/4 US, 9.2 grams Era: 1880s, Victorian Markings: N/A tests for 18K and 14K
