Alto RougeOne of South Africa's oldest and best-loved red wines, from the Alto estate on the Helderberg slopes of Stellenbosch. A five-grape red blend led by Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, it's composed and elegant, yet powerful. The very first vintage was made in 1922 and, once matured, was exported for sale here in the United Kingdom. It did so well with British drinkers that it was released in South Africa in 1933, and it has been a South African classic ever since.Tasting notesDark ruby in colour. Evocative aromas of cherry, sumac and charcuterie lead into a bright palate full of cherries and ripe raspberries, with an umami undertone. Structured, firm tannins. How it's madeThe grapes are hand-picked from north-facing vineyards on the Helderberg Mountain, cooled by afternoon sea breezes. Each variety is made separately, then matured for 14 to 18 months in French and American oak barrels before winemaker Bertho van der Westhuizen assembles the final blend.Food pairingLovely on its own, or with roast beef or sirloin, mushroom risotto, homemade burgers, and it's perfect with a braai or barbecue.Good to know Grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon (35%), Shiraz (35%), Merlot (13%), Cabernet Franc (9%) and Petit Verdot (8%), 2024 vintage blend Style: full-bodied dry red, oak-aged Region: Helderberg, Stellenbosch, South Africa 750ml bottle Contains sulphites Shipped from our Kingston warehouse, with free UK mainland delivery on orders over £70 Tasting notes and blend can vary slightly between vintages.Browse our full range of South African red wines. It is against the law to sell alcohol to anyone under the age of 18.
