This pregnancy test is a manual, qualitative, immunochromatographic (lateral flow), test for the detection of raised levels (>25 IU/L) of hCG (human Chorionic Gonadotropin) from a finger prick blood sample. General information Urine pregnancy test kits are usually able to detect hCG about 1 week after a missed period, but sensitive blood tests such as the SELFCHECK Pregnancy Blood test can show if you are pregnant as early as 10 days after conception. When used correctly, blood pregnancy tests can be more reliable than urine tests and, for this reason, are often used in hospital labs to confirm a urine pregnancy test. Unlike urine pregnancy tests, blood tests can be used at any time of the day and are unaffected by dilution from drinks. When a woman becomes pregnant, her body begins to produce hCG, a hormone which is released into the blood where its concentration rises over time. Unlike urine pregnancy tests, you can use the test at any time of the day or night. The test can detect pregnancy earlier than most urine tests because the hCG hormone produced in the placenta is first released into the blood and then into the urine. You may therefore get a positive result with a blood pregnancy test when a urine pregnancy test may still be negative. An early pregnancy test result can help you consider changes to your lifestyle such as stopping smoking or drinking alcohol. Warnings A test for a single biomarker, such as hCG, is not a diagnosis. Not following the instructions exactly as written in the instructions for use may cause a false positive or false negative result. Do not change your medication, diet or lifestyle solely on the basis of a self-test - always discuss your result with an appropriate healthcare professional first. Certain drugs containing hCG or used in combination with hCG and medical conditions such as cancer or uterine malignancies may lead to a false positive result. The test may show a false positive result if you have had a miscarriage, abortion or have given birth within the past 8 weeks. This is due to the test detecting hCG still remaining in your blood system. If the test is negative, it is most likely that your blood either doesn't contain hCG or has very low levels of hCG (the test detects hCG concentration as low as 25 IU/L) and that you are probably not pregnant. However, you may have miscalculated the date of your last period, especially if you have irregular periods. If your period does not start within a week, repeat the test. If you still get a negative result and your period has not started, you should speak with your doctor. A late period could be caused by other reasons. Whenever using a sensitive early pregnancy test, you should be aware that not all pregnancies will proceed to term, and it is not uncommon for a positive result to become negative early on in pregnancy. A small easy-to-use plastic pipette is provided with your test so that you can add the specified amount of blood to the test. Adding too much or too little blood to the test could give you a false result. The test has an overall agreement of 100% (96.16-100.0), sensitivity of 100%, and specificity of 100% with laboratory hCG tests. Although this test is reliable for the detection of hCG in blood, all medical tests can give false positive or false negative results.
