Near the base the buds are still closed, at the tip the color has fully arrived, so a single gesture carries the whole arc of a season. The ink stays patient, the washes stay light, and a small red seal keeps watch from the lower corner. Most of the sheet is left empty. Japanese painting has a word for that interval, ma, the pause that gives a form its weight, and it is what allows one branch to stand for an entire spring.
