Billy Tucci’s 2001 poignant illustration, now issued as a special 25th Anniversary Memorial Print benefiting the American Legion, captures the weight and the will of September 11 with unflinching honesty. A lone FDNY firefighter stands amid twisted stee, his weathered face set in grim resolve as a tattered American flag defiantly still flies. A.W. “Smokey” Linn’s Fireman’s Prayer is lettered in full—an appeal for strength to save lives of every age, for alertness in the smoke, and for God’s protection of family should the firefighter himself fall. The drawing is somber in its wreckage and its weary hero, yet powerful in the unbowed stance, the surviving flag, and the prayer’s quiet vow to keep answering the call. Twenty-five years later the print remains both memorial and statement: the victims are remembered, the heroes’ duty endures, and honors that same spirit of service through the American Legion.
