Choctaw – Style “Boat” Basket with Dianne Stanton

Friday, April 23, 2027 Noon – 6:00 PM 9” x 4” x 5.5” tall Prerequisites: Twill experience helpful This “Boat” basket was inspired by a rivercane basket made by the Choctaw Indians. Our version is woven from dyed rattan in the traditional colors, red, black and natural. Students will set up their spokes using a “loom”, weave a twill base and learn to turn the corners to produce this unique shape. The top of your basket is woven in plain weave and finished with a traditional rim and small handle for hanging on the wall. In 1988, I learned this basket from Claude Medford, Jr. when he taught a class for me in diagonal twill plaiting. I will share the many methods that Claude taught us to make this method of weaving easier! Tools needed: Awl, diagonal cutting pliers, clip clothespins
