The Great Astronomer Ulugh Beg

Timur's grandson ruled Samarkand and preferred astronomy to governing. From the observatory he built there he compiled the Zij-i Sultani, a catalogue of more than a thousand stars, and calculated the length of the year to within a minute of the modern value. He was murdered in 1449. Painted on hand-made mulberry paper from Samarkand, the city he governed. Inspired by Persian poetry and history, the ancient art of miniature lives on with the artist from Bukhara, Uzbekistan.
