THE CASTELLO DEI TRE CANTONI (SCICLI, SICILY) Between History and Archaeology

It is the result of a long collaboration between Polish and Sicilian archaeologists, made possible by the commitment of Anna Maria Sammito and Saverio Scerra, the constant support of Pietro Militello, and the active participation of the people of Scicli. The archaeological investigations have provided new information on the chronology of the castle walls, linking their construction and main building phases to the 14th and 15th centuries, under the lordship of the Chiaramonte and Cabrera families. Among the most significant discoveries is one of the few surviving medieval masonry workshops in Europe, connected with the preparation of mortar. The excavations also yielded numerous ceramic fragments documenting human presence in the area from very early periods, with the richest and most significant assemblage dating to the 14th–15th centuries. Traces of the church of Santa Maria della Raccomandata were also identified, enriching the historical topography of the site. The citizens of Scicli, with great passion and dedication, took part in the excavations and research activities. Thanks to their involvement, we now understand the history of the castle better and the community’s bond with its cultural heritage has been strengthened.
