Heros notatus SPotted Severums are a sizable yet tranquil species, making them ideal for communities of non-aggressive medium to large fish. In their natural habitat, they inhabit slow-moving blackwater tributaries filled with dense vegetation, roots, and branches. Consequently, your aquarium should feature a variety of sturdy plant species, ample bogwood, and some smooth stones. Spotted Severums can be kept in groups or pairs; however, if a pair decides to spawn in a community tank, they may exhibit increased aggression towards other fish. Mature males can occasionally be a bit confrontational with each other, so it’s important to have a tank that is at least 6ft long, equipped with plenty of visual barriers for other fish to evade attention. This is why starting with a reasonably sized group is advisable, as it helps distribute any minor disputes among the group, preventing any single fish from facing the brunt of aggression. Additionally, ensure that the aquarium has a good height, as these fish can grow quite tall. Other large, peaceful cichlids and some larger characin species can serve as good tankmates; however, while Spotted Severums are considered gentle, they should not be housed with smaller species.
