Term 2 2026 | The Painted Figure with Lucy Turnbull (SAT)
Lecturer: Lucy Turnbull in collaboration with model Macey Smith Sat 2 May, Sat 9 May & Sat 16 May 9.30am – 4.30pm Level: Intermediate to Advanced Age – 16+ This is an adult class and is not suitable for students under 16 years of age. Students under 18, must obtain parental or guardian consent and submit a completed consent form before the class commences. ‘The Painted Figure’ invites participants to look beyond the way in which a figure or object appears and consider the vast pictorial possibilities of the painted image. Through direct observation of still life arrangements and the clothed figure, participants develop confidence in using limited palettes, mixing colour, and strategies to construct paintings. Lucy facilitates open discussions, introducing modern and contemporary artists to illustrate how colour, tone, shape, and composition can be used to build form and organise pictorial space. This painting class provides a structured, supportive studio environment suitable for painters of all skill levels and experience. Materials Oil Paint The following palette is recommended. You are welcome to bring your own painting kit with any similar colours. Titanium White Zinc white Lemon Yellow Cadmium Yellow Medium Cadmium Red Light Alizarin Crimson Ultramarine Blue Raw Umber Ivory Black Optional additions: Viridian, Peach Black (Paynes Grey). Primed surfaces 6-8 small surfaces, ranging from postcard size up to A4. Suitable options include oil sketch paper, stretched canvas, gesso-prepared board, unstretched canvas, or gesso-prepared paper or cardboard 6 bristle brushes in a range of sizes (#2 to #10, rounds preferred) Palette knife large teardrop shape recommended A3 Paper palette Low toxic Odourless Solvent Low toxic Painting Medium (or linseed oil) Small sketchbook and graphite pencil Masking tape Cotton rags Soap for brush cleaning Disposable gloves (optional) Protective apron or shirt Lucy Turnbull is a lecturer at Adelaide Central School of Art. She was awarded a Masters of Fine Art at the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture (2018). Turnbull is interested in drawing and painting from observation to record her experience of place and connection to home.
